The Burlington Bike Council and the Burlington Walking Work Group merged in 2009 to form the Burlington Walk/Bike Council. Here’s what we’ve been up to as of September 2011.
Sponsored annual CCTA bus ads promoting respect among users on city streets and sidewalks
Participated in Safe Streets Collaborative
Helped design, then installed downtown “Walk Bikes on Sidewalk” sidewalk stencils
Created a Burlington Walk/Bike Council website – BurlingtonWalkBike.org
Held Meetup: Gathering of Burlington Walk/Bike Groups in March 2011
Helped edit & update the new Burlington bike map
Supported the Secure Bike Parking initiative in Burlington, which parked over 1,000 bikes at the Farmer’s Markets, the Art Hop, July 3rd Celebration, Kids Day, the Dragon Boat Festival, and other events in 2011
Events: Halloween Ride, Park(ing) Day, 350.org Moving Planet Ride.
Engineering (think projects that are built or installed)
Managed and coordinated re-build of Route 127 Bike Path entrance
Helped City Staff research bike lockers, which were installed in the Marketplace garage
Inventoried and worked with Parks & Rec staff to plan bike path signage
Inventoried and working with DPW staff planned bike route signage
Organized Green Up Day volunteers, and cleaned up graffiti on the bike path and re-painted bike path fencing
Worked with Burlington’s traffic signal technician to improve intersections and pedestrian crossings
Advocated for new crosswalk on North Avenue; currently advocating for improved crossings around Battery Park
Advocated for and helped plan additions and improvements to on-street bike lanes and sharrows.
Successfully advocated for improvements to King/Battery intersection that will improve pedestrian safety
Updated Burlington bike ordinances (there’s an education aspect to this, too)
Participated in Safe Streets Collaborative "Intersection Actions" (this is mostly education but Enforcement seemed so light without something more)
Evaluation & Planning
Provided design input and comments on major studies & development projects such as the Burlington Transportation Plan, the Pearl St. Streetscapes project, the Development at Battery and King Streets, the Moran Plan re-development, and others.
Initiated and contributed to successful silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community application to the League of American Bicyclists
Participated in Bike Path Task Force
